HERCULES & THE LERNAEAN HYDRA
Hercules’ second task was to defeat the Lernaean Hydra, a multi-headed serpent-like monster that terrorized the countryside of Lerna. The Hydra had nine heads, one of which was immortal, and every time Hercules cut off one of its heads, two more grew in its place. Hercules managed to overcome this challenge with the help of his nephew Iolaus, who cauterized the stumps with a burning torch to prevent new heads from growing. Hercules eventually reached the immortal head and chopped it off, burying it under a heavy rock. With the Hydra defeated, Hercules claimed its pelt as proof of his victory.
