The Binding of Fenrir
Fenrir, the monstrous wolf of Norse mythology, was an offspring of the trickster god Loki and the giantess Angrboda. Growing rapidly and posing a threat to the gods, the Aesir (Gods) decided to bind him. They crafted a seemingly unbreakable chain called Gleipnir, made from seemingly innocent elements such as the sound of a cat’s footsteps, a woman’s beard, the roots of mountains, the sinews of bears, the spittle of birds and the breath of fish.
With deceit and cunning, the Gods convinced Fenrir to test his strength against the supposedly unbreakable Gleipnir. Despite his suspicions, Fenrir agreed to be bound, thinking he could easily break free. As the chain tightened, Fenrir realized he had been deceived. Furious, he thrashed and bit at his captors, but Gleipnir held fast, rendering him helpless.
